Words by Dalene Heck / Photography by Dalene & Pete Heck

I have to be honest – I struggled a bit to get into the groove of Prince Edward Island.

Which has nothing to do with P.E.I. itself – at all. This has everything to do with me. And everything to do with the pace in which I approach my day.

I am on the move, constantly. And I don’t even mean just in the physical sense, but my mind is all over the place, as I suspect is the same for any entrepreneur or someone who lives a life on the road. Every day is filled with little tasks that keep me challenged – from adjusting to new environments constantly to racing around to see everything – myself or my mind does not settle often. Or for long.

P.E.I. forced me to slow. And not in a binding or commanding way, but instead with a gentle nudge. Because we both discovered that the very best of P.E.I. is not in racing around to see what’s out there. It’s enjoying what is right in front of you – whether it’s savouring a meal or a sunset or poking around on a beach. It’s not about rushing to find the best of, because in such a place, that best will probably be defined completely differently by each person.

And I don’t even know that I really appreciated that until I was gone.

Actually, let me be even more honest â€“ I don’t think I really appreciated it until the very moment I started to write this post in a summary of our visit there. When I reflected on these photos and thought of our favourite moments. And it makes me long to return, to feel that nudge again, to slow down and savour every instant that passes. Now I know.

  1. Your posts about PEI make me want to go back!
Please tell me how you research places before you visit. I tend to do a very poor job in that department and wind up missing things! Thanks!

    1. We do a lot of general searches to see images! That often leads us to photogenic spots, but for everything else, then we rely heavily on locals to tell us what to do!

  2. I’ve dreamed of visiting Prince Edward Island for the longest time. I loved Anne of Green Gables as a child and am now the proud mum of my very own “Carrots”. Your beautiful photos and words make me want to book that trip right away. Thank you

  3. Beautiful shots! And I think it’s an important message that you shared, to take a moment and enjoy the place you are visiting. So often, we rush to see everything we possibly can without just soaking it all in. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Stunning photos, as always.

I’m curious, was it as quiet and peaceful as it looks in these photographs, or were there 10,000 people standing behind you as you took each one? We are looking at heading up there next August, but I was figuring it would be overrun with summer tourists. Not that that’s the end of the world; I was just wondering if my expectations were accurate.

    1. It was much more peaceful than I imagined it to be Laura (I had your same concerns). There were some beaches that we had entirely to ourselves! Some of the better restaurants get quite busy but overall it was very laid back.

  5. Spectacular sights! And I totally agree with what you got to say, slowing down, appreciating things as they are and being mindful of everything that is in front of me are some of the best things that have happened to me through my travels. Travel blogging has always taken that a notch further by soaking in the same moments even more.
